The bottom line: the famous northern circuit — Lalibela, the Danakil Depression, Tigray — is off-limits for Western travelers right now. But Addis Ababa and much of the south (Omo Valley, Bale Mountains, Harar) are still operating, and Ethiopia welcomed over 1.6 million visitors in its latest fiscal year.
What governments are actually saying

Where we will NOT send you right now
- Lalibela and the Amhara region — flights to Lalibela were suspended in late September 2026 due to fighting nearby. The U.S. says do not travel here, full stop.
- Danakil Depression / Afar region — Level 4 for the US, Canada, and Australia.
- Tigray — Level 4 across all major advisories.
We don't care what a competitor will promise you. These are our red lines until the advisories change, and we'll refund or reroute any deposit tied to them.
What's still running — and how we handle it
- Addis Ababa — the U.S. Embassy describes security in the capital as stable. Museums, markets, coffee culture, and the National Museum (Lucy's home) are all open.
- Omo Valley — tribal-cultural tours continue to run.
- Bale Mountains — Ethiopia's best hiking; wild Ethiopian wolves, afro-alpine landscapes.
- Harar — the walled Islamic city, hyena feeding at dusk, coffee ceremonies.
- Lake Tana & the Blue Nile Falls — running, though we monitor the wider regional picture daily.
For every southern itinerary, we keep a registered local guide with you, carry a satellite communicator on remote legs, and build your trip with same-day cancellation options if conditions shift.
Practical safety rules for Ethiopia (any year)
- Register with your embassy (Americans: enroll in the free STEP program) before you fly.
- Check advisories, not just blogs — they update faster than any travel guide.
- Fly, don't bus, between regions — Ethiopian Airlines' domestic network is excellent, and overland routes in the north are not safe right now.
- Keep contingency cash — communications disruptions and exit bans are specifically cited by the U.S. advisory.
- Travel with a registered local operator — this is not the trip to DIY.
FAQ
Can I still visit Lalibela in 2026?
Not responsibly right now. Flights are suspended, and the U.S., Canada, Australia, and the UK all say do not go. We've moved our Lalibela itineraries to a waitlist — send an inquiry and we'll contact you when advisories change.
Is Addis Ababa safe?
The U.S. Embassy describes the capital as stable, with the usual big-city precautions. The countrywide rating remains Level 3, so keep contingency plans.
Is Ethiopia safe for solo travelers?
The south and Addis are workable solo with a registered guide. The north is not — don't go alone, or at all, until advisories change.
When will the north reopen?
Honestly: unknown. We update this page the week anything changes. Send an inquiry to join the waitlist and you'll hear it from us first.
Planning a trip?
The south is open and running now. The north is on waitlist until advisories clear.
